That's a question a girl named Annabel asked me on Instagram recently.
I love this question. Cos we're not really taught how to make friends, are we?
Well, not as adults anyway.
I believe that you're the average of the five people you spend the most time with. So, if you hang around with intelligent, funny, brave and kind people, they probably help you to be more intelligent, funny, brave and kind as well!
And look, I know you can't always control who you spend most of your time with. But I do know that when you hang out with people who make you feel good, life is infinitely better.
So, here are my three tips for making friends like that:
First up, I reckon that when it comes to friends it's always quality over quantity.
It doesn't matter if you don't have heaps of friends. Focus on forming close friendships with people you really like. People whose values you admire, people who challenge you to be better and people who make you laugh!
Secondly, be the person you want to spend time with. I know that sounds like the kind of wanky quote you'd see on an overpriced coffee mug, but if it was, I'd buy it! It's true.
So, if you want the funny, intelligent and brave friends mentioned above, guess who's gonna be cracking jokes while diving with sharks on a wildlife conservation expedition? (That sounds sick by the way, I'd like to come plz).
What I mean is that you've gotta put yourself out there in new ways, doing the things you love to do. So, if you want to meet outdoorsy, nature-loving friends, join a local trail running or hiking club. Be the person YOU want to spend time with.
Lastly, take initiative.
If you meet someone cool, get their number or follow them on Instagram, go for a coffee or a surf or something! It's a little bit like dating - you might feel awkward but you've got to put yourself out there if you want to make friends.
Over to you, when was the last time you made a new friend?
And what are your tips for making new mates?
Hit reply and tell me.
Maybe I'll share a few of your tips with the rest of our letter gang!
